Re: When The Doors Close

Now for you. I am forced to question your intelligence.

1. Pound has ALL THE SAME AP offerings that any other Wise County School does, because they are offered over the VSEN network broadcast from Wise. How do I know this? BECAUSE I WAS IN ONE OF THEM - AP History to be exact.

2. We dont give a [censored] about what NOVA thinks about us or what they do in their worthless decadent school systems. If you like NOVA so much, pack your [censored] and get out of here. And we in Pound really dont care what people like you think about our school either. It's none of your business, your kids dont go there and its not in your town.

3. [ QUOTE ]
I'm going to live in Pound my entire life! I love my community!

[/ QUOTE ] YOU GOT THAT RIGHT at least. This is my home. Im proud of my home. And I have no desire to eave it for any reason whatsoever.

4. [ QUOTE ]
As it stands right now, if I had a high school age student in Wise County he/she would be yanked for homeschooling/private schooling or moved to a better school system. I would be doing my child a disservice by not giving him/her every academic option available.

[/ QUOTE ]
Please do it! And rid us of your stupidity.

5. [ QUOTE ]
These towns are already dead.

[/ QUOTE ] You live in Wise, not in one of these towns. So its easy to look down on them. So therefore its none of your affair. You went to school here, you didnt like it. So what. I went to school here and did.

6. [ QUOTE ]
What do the residents of Pound have to show for their tax dollars? Pound has Foodland, The Dollar General, a carwash, a broken down footbridge, and a park that consists of a single small prefab play gym. They use the the old Christopher Gist High School as a town hall. I would prefer to see it used in a more academic sense (maybe even alongside the tow hall functions). A museum perhaps, education center, etc. But no. A town hall is all it is. There's no funding or desire to do more with it. Not a great sense of community there.

[/ QUOTE ] Once again.. its none of your affair. We don't care what you think.

6. [ QUOTE ]
Pound doesn't have the offerings and refuses to provide offerings to bring development. They won't even permit a fast food joint in town limits

[/ QUOTE ]
Idiocy. Obviously you've not been here in a while. We have a Subway, Pizza Plus, the Pixie, and a new catering place just went in. But its all back to the same point.. you dont live here so why should you care?

It all boils down to this.. if people from Pound, Appy, St. Paul, or wherever want to keep their school in their town, that is their business. People in Wise or Big Stone Gap have no business telling anyone in any other town how they should handle their own affairs.

Re: When The Doors Close

When people from all over Wise Co. foot the bill for those tiny dilapidated schools to stay open, then yes, they do have a say in it.

If St Paul, Pound, Appalachia want to incorporate and fund their own school system, then more power to them.

As for myself, I want the best bang for my buck. And IMO that is consolidation.

My point to. But you don't win folks by making them feel inferior. Or as if your talking down to them.
One thing most should remember. This is a working class area. Most folks know dollars and cents. Not BA's and BS.
Lay it out and show them why it will work. Don't slap them in the face then ask them to accept it.
It may happen in central and northern and eastern va. But this isn't those areas.
Humiliate a person here by making them seem ignorant, you just stirred up a nest. Something some of us here know and have tried to avoid.
Give the people figure and facts without humiliating them. They are more to work with you than against you.

What about all the severance tax money that has come out of Pound and Appy over the years and has been used for the benefit of Wise and BSG? As fas as Im concerned, its about time we saw some of it back. And from now on it should stay in Pound and Appy and not be used to aid their economic destruction.

Re: When The Doors Close

Elp6n- Just because I am not an ancient decrepit person such as yourself, does not mean that I do not possess wisdom. If you're looking up our Myspace profiles, you obviously do not have much of a life to occupy your time. And just so you know I dont give a [censored] who gets on my Myspace profile and looks at it. Send me a message next time your on there, I'd love to hear from you!

Just so you know Pound still has its AP courses. And as for independent study, its not a bad thing. I had Spanish IV indepenently, and I did just fine. Im sorry that back in the day they didnt have more classes for you and that you were "royally screwed over in secondary education."

And as for these added AP classes and expense of transporting students, these could be easily resolved if one were to set it up online. In college loads of students take classes online. Then there would be no expense of taking the students to a college campus, all they would have to do is go to the library of their own highschools and sit down at a computer. And besides that, Greg Mullins said that if any studend was interested in classes at the college while they were in highschool, but could not arrange for transportation, that he would take them down there himself. I am also sorry that many of the people you know couldnt hack college life.

As I have noted in previous posts, I have been to schools away from here, and WE ARE NOT BEHIND!!! I dont know where you would get a ridiculous idea like that. And just so you know, Pound has more than one math teacher, more than one english teacher, more than one science teacher, and so on and so forth! And a lot of the classes now adays have 20-30 students in them.

You just dont understand that our school makes our town. If you are so convinced that our towns are so worthless, then get out we dont want you here because it is people like you who have helped to make it this way. Our towns are not dead yet . This is why we fight, if we have no school, we have no town. And just because a school is consolidated does not mean that it is better for the education of the students. There isnt anything wrong with what our kids are learning here in Pound.

And I think it is a good idea for students to wait to take these classes. Most (NOT ALL) students are not mature enough to handle college level courses when they are still in highschool. They dont have teachers asking "well where's this assignemt?" the college teachers just right down zero and move on to the next paper on their desk. There is a reason that highschool stuff is taught at highschool level, and the college classes are at the college. As far as AP classes saving parents tuition money, I am in my second year of college and thanks to Financial Aid I have yet to pay a single dime for any of the education I have gained .

And as for comparing colleges and universities, it makes perfect sense, it's the same thing just on a bigger scale.

Maybe we do not think we are suffering? Maybe we are happy like we are and don't want the bigger liberal schools to interfere with us? Has anyone thought about that?

And as for us not permitting fast food restraunts, well how did subway pizza plus, and the pixie get in? they must have slipped through the door when we weren't lookin. We dont want to have all these industrial parks, we like our town the way it is and we dont want to destroy everything beautiful in this town for a mcdonalds.

Burton2019- As far as another reason communities come together, consolidation brings us together to fight the bigger schools that are trying to bully us into something that will only benifit them.

The_Sage- As for not being back in time for class, there are lots of students who leave after 3rd block because of their jobs. Why can't students maybe leave after lunch and go to these campuses? And maybe we like our sour apples.

Sportsman- I do believe that these schools are worse off because they were consolidated. As for the research, if you look hard enough you will always find someting to support your point of view and contradict everyone elses and vice versa. And I repeat what I said about online AP courses, it would give everyone an equal chance and not have to drive anywhere. Yes I am close minded and I am proud of it. If some of the people on this board are examples of what open mindedness can do, then Im going to lowes tomorrow and buying a padlock.

In case you were asleep the past year or something, the elected officials are the ones who started this whole mess to begin with.

LPDFTBL- I was discouraged this evening when I came back on the board, until I read your post. If we can change one mine then we can change 100 or 1000. I myself have moved away from here twice and I always find myself wanting to come back. And you are right, 80 million is nothing if it keeps our kids attitudes from becoming like some on here. I have lived in Big cities and I started to pick up the snobbish attitued you speak of, but then I realized what I was becoming and I was apauled by it. Soon after I moved back here, and I have never been happier.

EVERYONE ELSE--KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT!!!!

I agree its high time that we stopped paying into these bigger towns that dont give a [censored] about us as long as we keep giving them OUR money. And again I agree, we shouldnt have our own money turned against us and used to destroy our community.

I like you but honestly you have no clue. Have you ever just did anything for doing it.
Have you been to a Kelly game? Felt good because they won and didn't lose?

It's a thing called pride and respect. A thing us in this area learned being raised. Well some of us. It seems some have outgrown it.

No. I know what is right. I just hate some who seem to have forgotten where they come from. Actually rubbing it some of the faces of others.

We may be laid back. We may not have all the AP classes and i hate some were held back. But ya know. We may have something some don't. A thing called a little bit of pride, a little respect and whole lot of humility about who we are.
So if that breaks it off in some's arse. Then im sorry. Well no i ain't.
Some need to be told a few things. And i guess im just saying what i think. I might like ya might and you might be my friend.
But right or wrong i will say what i think. I think with what i have seen and heard in some ways.

I would rather my grandson be raised in the old school if you and elp6n are evidence of the new way.
If that is anyway to win folks. Then it sucks. And it sucks big time.

You don't slap folks in the face and then win them over with a cigar and song routine.

Re: When The Doors Close

I completely agree with you. Around here I think that because we are in a way separated from the rest of the world that we are raised better. We learn to respect people, to take pride in ourselves and where we are from, and to not think that we are better than others. I also agree that some seem to have forgotten these important values.
